Now I’m not an idiot so I’m not going to ask how to get speed that isn’t there
. Anyhow, we just got Hughesnet 2MB/sec. High Speed internet for 9.95/month. It seems quite slow however, and I’d like it to be faster. Our biggest problem is that most of the computers are too far away from the router. That will be solved as soon as we get another router (someone is giving us a nice wireless router on Thursday) and 150ft. of ethernet cable (I know how to make the ends).
Now, they have a limit as to how much you can download in a day. For us, its 500MBs. Now, if we download between 2:00AM and 7:00AM then downloads are free. Otherwise, if we go over the limit, then we get really really slow internet for 24 hours (and thats what happened after a few big updates).
Sooooo, I am going to have to schedule all of the updates to take place in the middle of the night (for our Mac, Linux, and windows computers).
Still, I work on web development. I’m no pro at all, but at least I update our website and stuff. As you all know, websites can get pretty big and when I need to upload or download, that could be a problem. I heard of things that help with bandwidth, but I know hardly anything about that.
Any ideas how to make the internet ‘faster’??
Thanks!

Also, the obvious is to get the 3 MB service. This, however has the same 500MB limit and it costs 9.99/month. Right now we cannot afford that. Although we do live in a LARGE house that is divided. The price is being split between us and our friends that live next door.
Also, is the 3MB service going to make it that much faster??? I dunno.
Oh yeah, the reason we have Hughes is because we live up in the mountains in New York (near cobleskill, and amsterdam) and both DSL and cable is not available here.
Also,
I’ve read that there are accessories that you can buy to make the connection better. Such as a signal amplifier and a satellite signal locator.
So, will any of these devices make the signal better? Also, note that the cable travels at least 150 feet to the modem, and it will be 150ft. more once we get this other router.

1) Nothing ‘helps’ with bandwidth. if you have a 500MB limit, you can only transfer 500MB. You can compress the files, so that they’re smaller, but you can’t fake bandwidth.
2) Check your connection speed at http://speedtest.net/ Your download speed has very little to do with your connection speed. If your connection speed is 2mb/s, you’re good. Downloads are what you get – that depends on your path speed, and the internet itself (the computers that make up the internet) control that.
Firstly, that deal is noit high speed internet. I am meant to be able to get 20mb/s+ and that’s not even high speed. So basically you’re getting ripped off. Go to: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ and then search in your area for a good plan. You will need at least 2GB+ really. JUst to let yyou know, looked at a random deal and this is what it had:
TPG:
ADSL2+ with VOIP, 50GB downloads
$49.99 per month
